English

In English the prime focus is to study language through the use of written, visual and oral communication texts.

In studying these texts the aim is to understand how language works and to use it effectively in all facets of every day life. We aim to give students a sound understanding and appreciation of literature as well as developing their skills to use language in writing, reading, listening, viewing and speaking and be functionally literate.

We recognise the diverse background of our students and the values derived from them. Using that as a base we develop their language skills and understandings encouraging them to aspire to their individual goals regarding career and life style.

English - Years 8, 9 & 10

In lower school the ACES Program caters for our academically talented students. English also offers specialist assistance in the areas of literacy, working at a more individual level to improve outcomes.

As a result of our department’s work in collaboration with the literacy specialist teachers, the NAPLAN results in 2009 showed the Darling Range Sports College Year 9 students were above the performance of like schools in the Reading and Writing outcomes.
