Teaching and Learning

Middle School

Students in Year 8 and 9 are part of the College Middle School structure.  The focus of the Middle School is to establish quality relationships with a focus upon pastoral care.  Transition issues are eased as students are supported by two Student Services Managers, Year Coordinators and their classroom teachers.

All students study year long courses in Mathematics, English, Science, Society and Environment, General Physical Education and Health Education.  Year 9 students also study year long courses in The Arts and Technology and Enterprise Learning Areas.  Year 8 students study semester courses in The Arts and Technology and Enterprise. 

For the majority of students, the time commitment to each Learning Area is as follows:

  • English – 4 hours per week
  • Mathematics – 4 hours per week
  • Science – 4 hours per week
  • Society & Environment – 4 hours per week
  • Physical Education – 2 hours per week
  • Health Education – 1 hour per week
  • Electives – 6 hours per week (3 x 2 hour sessions)

Health Education and General Physical Education are compulsory for all students and are automatically allocated.

Students are be able to choose 3 electives – one from each of the two Learning Areas of The Arts and Technology &
Enterprise and an extra elective from either Learning Area.

All Sports Academy students participate in their Specialist Sport and Sports Science in year long courses.

Senior School

Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 belong to the College’s Senior School.  The emphasis in Senior School is to not only encourage all students to achieve to the best of their ability, but also to encourage and help them develop into independent, self-motivated learners who will have the skills and motivation to continue learning long after they have left the College.

Year 10

For Year 10 students, the respective time allocation across the seven learning areas is as follows:

  • English – 4 hours per week
  • Mathematics – 4 hours per week
  • Science – 4 hours per week
  • Society & Environment – 4 hours per week
  • Physical Education – 2 hours per week
  • Health Education – 1 hour per week
  • Electives – 6 hours per week (3 x 2 hour sessions)

Health Education and a Physical Education subject are compulsory for all students and are automatically
allocated.

Students will be able to choose three electives from the Learning Areas of Arts, Physical Education or Technology and Enterprise and an extra elective from either Learning Area.

Year 11 and 12 

In 2014, Year 11 and 12 students are offered three pathways of study:

  1. ATAR Pathway – Designed specifically to prepare students for tertiary entrance, especially university and for further study and/or career opportunities.
  2. General Pathway  – Designed to prepare students for further study (TAFE) and/or career opportunities.
  3. VET Pathway – Designed to allow students to complete a course that is relevant to their career preferences while experiencing one day/week in the workplace.
