STEM

Our STEM program is integrated into all learning areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. We currently run STEM as an elective in Years 8, 9 and 10 and aim to bring engaging and technology-focused projects that has basis in the real world.

The overall STEM skills focus on collaboration, problem solving and communication. Each project is aimed at enhancing these three key skills, while also developing each student’s creativity, critical analysis, teamwork, independent thinking, initiative, digital literacy and coding skills.

The continual advances in technology are changing the way students learn, connect, and interact every day. These skills developed by students through STEM will provide them with the foundation to succeed at school and beyond. To further develop confident users of technology, students have access to state-of-the-art technology in the Darling Range Learning Community STEM library.

Darling Range Sports College has a schoolwide approach to STEM and works alongside external agencies such as Bendigo Bank Forrestfield and Curtin University to ensure our students our given the best opportunity to engage in the program. In collaboration with these agencies, we host the Forrestfield Regional First Lego League Competition which is aimed at engaging students in critical thinking, communicating and collaborating with students from different schools.  In preparation for this Competition, our teams are part of the Robotics Club and meet twice a week to work on building the skills required to achieve success.

Our students are also provided with the opportunity to engage in STEM through the Hillbilly Cart Challenge, First Australia WARP competition robot build and 3D printing competitions.
