Basketball Program

Our specialist Basketball Program provides elite coaching to improve a player’s individual skill set, knowledge of the game and team work which will enable them to compete successfully in state league teams. Students are given opportunities to participate in interschool competitions which enables them to develop their skills and team tactics in full game environments.

What does the program entail?

The program consists of:

  • Basketball specific fitness (monitored by The Screening Lab which is an online injury prevention tool)
  • Skill development
  • Game play
  • Competing in lightning carnivals against other schools
  • Sport Science which will educate the students on nutrition, biomechanics, psychology, coaching and exercise physiology
  • Sport Science leads into Physical Education studies in Year 11 and 12

Who is the Coach?

Alan Black
Basketball Program Coordinator

Alan brings with him a wealth of playing and coaching experience in national and international basketball. This has come from his time as a player and Head Coach with the Perth Wildcats where he won a championship in the 1999/2000 season.  He was Head Coach of the Illawarra Hawks, Sydney Kings and the Malaysian Institute of Sport where in 2017, they won a gold medal in the South East Asian games.

Throughout his time as Head Coach, he was also the Australian Boomers Assistant Coach for the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games.

Alan is also a qualified school teacher and will be combining his basketball coaching with some time in the classroom teaching our Sport Science classes.  His experience from working at the Institute of Sport is a valuable asset to the course.

Alan is a great addition to our already impressive state and nationally recognised suite of coaches and he is looking forward to putting together a strong foundation for a successful high performance program at Darling Range Sports College.
