Music Program

The Department of Education’s Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS) cover 400 primary and secondary Western Australian public schools.

IMSS provides instrumental instruction, ensemble direction, an instrumental loan, maintenance and repair service, a resource centre and varied enrichment activities for students in a variety of instruments at each school.

IMSS provides a unique opportunity for students to develop their instrumental skills and Darling Range Sports College is proud to continue working with IMSS by offering:

  • Contemporary (acoustic / electric) Guitar
  • Bass Guitar
  • Classical Guitar
  • Percussion/Drumkit
  • Voice

Students can undertake Music from Years 7 to 9 which incorporates how to analyse, imitate and create music from a variety of modern popular styles. It also looks at a range of modern music genres and the techniques and performance skills that go into playing and creating them.

Our Music program maintains a practical performance focus, with opportunities to develop and apply skills on core contemporary instruments like guitar and keyboard. It also continues to explore production skills using musical technology and DAW (digital audio workstation) software that are foundational to current music industry practices.  Students also have the opportunity to perform in a public forum either in class or at College concerts/events.

We also offer a Certificate II in Music Industry for Year 10 students which prepares them to perform a range of tasks in the music industry, using practical elements and fundamental operational knowledge in environments that require foundational skills in music performance, music making or composition, sound production or music business.

The program is suited to students with an interest in music who are keen to develop their skills as a musician or producer with the aim to perform, use music technology and be involved with live music events.

Career and pathways opportunities may lead to roles such as studio assistant, performer or session musician, entry level producer, stagehand, songwriter, and road crew.

Students will continue developing skills in musical performance, song writing and production while becoming more versed in a range of industry practices.

Students must play an instrument or voice. Students also have the opportunity to perform in a public forum either in class or at College concerts/events.
